WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service experienced a busy week with over 100 calls for service during the week of April 24 to 30, resulting in a total of 20 charges. Of the charges, eight were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 11 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act (AGRA). Two of the criminal charges resulted from individuals who either failed to comply with a condition of their release or failed to appear in court when required.
Well, the snow is finally gone and warmer weather seems to be upon us. Along with the warm weather comes spring-cleaning, yard work, and lots of outdoor activity for people and pets/animals. Not all activity is of the friendly kind and residents are reminded to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight.
“Car-diggings” and bicycle thefts are common issues during the summer months and preventative measures to secure your property will help reduce these incidents. Bylaw enforcement will also be out and about responding to complaints or identified issues such as parking infractions and messy yards etc.
During the week, several traffic related charges were laid under the TSA, including three for using a cell phone while driving, three for speeding, and four for either having an invalid registration or driver’s license. One charge was also laid under the AGRA for unlawfully having alcohol in a public place.
Early Thursday afternoon, officers responded to a reported individual who was spotted walking along the street but appeared bloody and intoxicated. Officers located the heavily intoxicated adult male who appeared to be bleeding from a suspected fall while walking. The male was treated by EMS personnel and then held in custody until he was sober and released without charge.
Late Friday night, a traffic stop on a vehicle that was found to be unregistered resulted in an adult male being charged with impaired driving as well as a charge under the TSA for operating an unregistered vehicle. The male was arrested and released with an upcoming court date.
A Saturday evening traffic stop also resulted in a driver being charged with impaired driving. An officer conducted the traffic stop after observing the vehicle swerving into the oncoming lane and nearly hitting a curb. The adult female driver displayed signs of impairment and was ultimately arrested, charged accordingly, and released with an upcoming court date.
The Weyburn Police Service also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
