WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) experienced another busy week, responding to 109 calls for service during the week of June 19 to 25, resulting in a total of 47 charges. Of the charges, eight were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 37 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and two under other Provincial Acts or Regulations. Of the eight criminal charges, five were related to individuals who either failed to appear in court as required or failed to comply with a condition of their release.
A reported theft from a retail store is currently being investigated as surveillance video has been obtained to assist with the investigation. The video shows an individual attend an outdoor fenced area of the store and throw items over the fence so they can be retrieved from the other side.
A theft from another store resulted in an adult female being arrested for the theft as well as for an outstanding warrant. The female was charged accordingly and released with an upcoming court date.
The week was busy in relation to traffic safety as 37 tickets were issued for infractions under the TSA. Of the 37 tickets issued, 23 were in relation to speeding and eight were in relation to unregistered vehicles or driving without a valid driver’s license. A good portion of the tickets issued by WPS officers during the week were the result of Weyburn’s two CTSS (Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan) officers participating in the two-day Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) hosted in Estevan.
Also related to traffic safety concerns, the Weyburn Police received multiple reports of drivers failing to stop in school zones for signage held by safety patrol students. Weyburn Police will monitor school zones and encourages anyone who witnesses a vehicle that fails to stop as required to report the incident to the police.
On Saturday evening, officers conducted a compliance check on an adult male who was released on several conditions. The male was found to be breaching several of his release conditions as well as found to be in possession of stolen property and a weapon dangerous to the public. The male was charged accordingly and released with an upcoming court date.
The Weyburn Police Service also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
