WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service experienced another busy week, responding to 120 calls for service during the week of June 12 to 18, resulting in a total of 37 charges. Of the charges, 12 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 20 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and five under other Provincial Acts or Regulations. Of the 37 charges, five were related to individuals who either failed to appear in court as required or failed to comply with a condition of their release.
On Tuesday evening, officers conducted a High Visibility Enforcement project focusing on traffic safety. Over 100 vehicles were checked during the project resulting in nine traffic tickets being issued and two drivers receiving suspensions for testing positive for the presence of cannabis. The traffic tickets issued include infractions of speeding, using a cell phone while driving, driving while disqualified, failing to wear a seatbelt, and operating an unregistered vehicle.
The week kicked off with a bang (literally) as officers responded to a reported “shot fired” at a local motel on June 12th. Responding officers evacuated the motel and secured the surrounding area. The Joint Tactical Support Team (JTST), consisting of specially trained officers from both the Weyburn Police Service and Estevan Police Service, also responded.
The matter was brought to a conclusion without further incident as three elderly males were identified as hotel occupants who had accidently discharged a rifle in their room while checking to make sure the rifles were clear. All three males were charged for unsafe storage of a firearm, and one male was additionally charged for careless use of a firearm.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, an officer noticed a vehicle being driven erratically and conducted a traffic stop, which resulted in an adult male being charged with impaired driving, refusing a breath demand, and assaulting a police officer. The intoxicated male was uncooperative while being dealt with and spit on the officer. The male was arrested, charged, and released with an upcoming court date.
The Weyburn Police Service also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
