WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 78 calls for service during the period of Jan. 22-28, resulting in a total of 18 charges. Of the charges, nine were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, eight under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Summary Offences Procedure Act (SOPA). Of the nine criminal charges, seven were in relation to individuals who either failed to comply with a condition of their release or failed to attend court when required to do so.
Officers responded to the report of a suspicious adult male who appeared to be in a delirious state of mind and attempted to get into a courier vehicle as it passed by. Upon arrival, officers were confronted by the suspicious male, who was holding a large knife and ignoring their commands to put it down.
Officers had previous dealings with the male and were ultimately able to convince him to drop the knife and take him into custody without further incident. The male was taken to the Weyburn General Hospital for examination prior to being charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
The Weyburn Police Service has received a number of enquiries regarding snowy/icy sidewalks and the responsibility of residents/owners maintaining the area bordering their property. The City of Weyburn bylaw regarding “Walkways, Driveways and Parking Spaces” (Part 4 of Bylaw # 2022-3452 – Property Maintenance and Nuisance Abatement) reads, “If a walkway, driveway, or parking space is provided, it shall be maintained so as to afford safe passage thereon under normal use and weather conditions.”
Complying with this bylaw ensures that pedestrians can safely use the sidewalks and not risk injury by walking along traffic on the streets or on a slippery/icy surface. Officers responded to a two-vehicle collision resulting in one driver being charged under the TSA for proceeding from a stop sign before safe to do so. The adult male who was charged was attempting a left hand turn onto Highway 39 when he collided with a vehicle travelling southeast on Highway 39. Both vehicles sustained significant damages but no major injuries resulted.
An adult male faces a charge of uttering threats of harm following messages and communications with an adult female from a previous domestic relationship.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
