WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 96 calls for service during the period of Sept. 4-10, resulting in a total of 17 charges. Of the charges, 10 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, five under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one each under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act (AGRA) and the City of Weyburn bylaws.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, officers on patrol observed a vehicle being driven erratically and conducted a traffic stop. The driver initially attempted to evade the officer by accelerating quickly but lost control of the vehicle while making a left turn causing the vehicle to come to a stop.
The adult male driver now faces several charges, including impaired driving, dangerous driving, flight from a police officer, possession of stolen property, failing to comply with a probation order, and driving without a valid driver’s license. The male also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and was held to appear in court.
On Friday, a local business provided store video to the Weyburn Police showing an individual removing items from the shelf and walking out of the store without paying on two separate occasions. A suspect has been identified and charges are pending further investigation.
On Friday evening, an anonymous “RID” (Report Impaired Drivers) caller reported a vehicle that was swerving and had bumped into the curb a couple of times. Officers responded, located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle was found to have a flat tire and the adult male driver was found to be impaired. The driver was charged accordingly and released with an upcoming court date. Police thank the alert motorist who called 911 and helped remove an impaired driver from our roads.
Late Saturday night, officers responded to a reported theft from a liquor outlet. Upon arrival, officers were advised that an adult male attempted to steal a bottle of alcohol but an employee intercepted the male while he was running toward his vehicle, causing him to drop the bottle and flee empty-handed. The male has been identified and charged accordingly.
The Weyburn Police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
