WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 77 calls for service during the week of Jan. 15 to 21, resulting in two charges under the Traffic Safety Act, one Cannabis Control Act violation and 18 charges being laid under the Criminal Code.
Police responded to a break-and-enter of a residence on Saturday, and the investigation revealed that an adult female was responsible, as she stole several items from the home. Police located the suspect where the female resisted arrested and kicked officers. The woman was charged with break-and-enter, resisting arrest and assault of a police officer. She was remanded into custody and will appear in court on a later date.
Amongst the calls for service, there were numerous mental health calls, fraud calls and car diggings throughout the city. People are reminded to keep their vehicles locked while unattended, to reduce the risk of theft and unwanted individuals from entering the vehicles.
Cannabis impaired driving continues to be an issue within the city and poses the same risks and consequences as impaired driving by alcohol. Please remember to always drive sober.
With recent cold warnings, dressing appropriately for the weather is highly encouraged. The police service received several complaints regarding adults and children not dressed appropriately, requesting wellbeing checks on the individuals. With temperatures dropping in the neighborhood of -50 degrees, frostbite can damage exposed skin in seconds and place individuals at high risk for hypothermia.
The Weyburn police received a complaint on Jan. 17, regarding an individual who damaged their property. Officers spoke to the individual who was charged with mischief and released for a later court appearance.
Two individuals attended the Weyburn Police Service on Jan. 18 to report that they were assaulted by a visitor in their home after a disagreement had taken place. The individual was charged with assault, placed on conditions and released for court on a later date.
While investigating an unrelated complaint on Jan. 19, police located a vehicle that smelled strongly of cannabis. Police entered an impaired investigation and the driver tested positive on the roadside device, resulting in a three-day driver’s license suspension as well as three-day vehicle impound.
Officers attended to a local business on Jan. 20, after being notified that there was an individual inside their public bathroom for an extended period of time. When police arrived, they located an individual who was smoking illicit drugs inside of the bathroom. The individual was arrested for public intoxication and taken back to the police station where the individual was checked out by EMS, and as a result the person was transported to the hospital for care.
