WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 82 calls for service during the week of April 10-16, resulting in a total of 18 charges. Of the charges, seven were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 10 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Vehicle Equipment Regulations (VER).
Although spring teased us with a few sunny days, winter is not done just yet. A pending winter storm is threatening to hit the Weyburn area this week, and the combination of freezing rain and snow can make travelling very treacherous. The Weyburn Police advise residents to travel only if necessary, and if so, to drive with extra caution during this late winter storm.
Late Wednesday evening, officers responded to a call reporting an adult male slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle parked in a business lot. The caller advised that the vehicle was running and attempts to awaken the male were unsuccessful. Both EMS and police were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive male in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was parked but running. Officers shut off the vehicle and the male started to regain consciousness. EMS personnel examined the male who did not require further treatment. The male was charged with impaired driving and released with an upcoming court date.
A Friday evening traffic stop resulted in an adult male facing several charges including impaired driving and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Thanks to an alert motorist, another impaired driver was removed from our streets.
The motorist noticed a vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the street and up onto the opposite curb, and immediately called 911 to Report an Impaired Driver (RID). The information provided enabled the responding officer to quickly locate the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop. The driver displayed signs of impairment and further investigation resulted in the male being arrested and charged. The individual was released with an upcoming court date.
During the lunch hour on Monday, police received a call from a resident reporting a group of teenagers that were causing a disturbance. The caller advised that the teenagers sounded intoxicated and seemed to be arguing amongst themselves. Police attended and while speaking to several individuals about the noise complaint, officers recognized one of them who had an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The individual was arrested and held for court the next morning.
On Tuesday afternoon, officers attended a residence to assist removing an unwanted guest. The caller advised that they had asked the guest to leave but he was heavily intoxicated and refused to leave. Officers took the adult male into custody and held him overnight until he was sober and released in the morning without any charges.
The Weyburn Police Service also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
