Woman accused of abducting and causing man's death sentenced to 2.5 years in prison

Karlyne Morin of Big River First Nation was charged with Richard Netmaker's death

PRINCE ALBERT – A 21-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death was sentenced to 709 days in prison.

Karlyne Morin of Big River First Nation was arrested in August and charged for a Jan. 6, 2020, incident where 36-year-old Richard Netmaker was abducted from his home by four people with bats and machetes on Big River First Nation.

In October, RCMP arrested Riley Ahenakew, 31, and Stephanie Starblanket, 34, from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, and Roderick Dreaver, 26, from Big River First Nation. The three were charged with criminal negligence causing death, and two counts of forcible confinement.

Police searched for Netmaker and found him deceased in a rural area near Pekakumew Lake on Jan. 10, 2020.

Dreaver has a show cause hearing on Dec. 15. Ahenakew appears Jan. 10, 2022, to enter a plea. Starblanket appears in court next on Jan. 11, 2022, to elect how she wants to be tried.
