WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 59 calls for service during the period of January 3 through January 9, resulting in a total of 11 charges.
Of the charges, six were under the Criminal Code of Canada and five were under the Traffic Safety Act. The criminal charges resulting from the first week of the new year, include two charges of assault, one charge of impaired driving, one charge of refusing to comply with a breath demand, one charge of taking a motor vehicle without consent, and one charge of failing to comply with the conditions of a release order. All of those charged during the week are adults, and all have an upcoming date to appear in court to answer to their charge.
Aside from the week’s regular police duties, the Weyburn Police Service is excited to announce the arrival of their newest member – “Oakley”. The first ever WPS “police” K9 arrived at her new home on Jan. 7.
Oakley, a 16 month-old female Belgian Malinois, is one of seven pups resulting from artificial insemination through the Winnipeg Police Service's in-house breeding program. Oakley's legendary father “Judge” spent 10 years working with the Winnipeg Police Service, conducting over 500 arrests during his career.
The Weyburn Police Service, after receiving approval for the addition of a K9 to the service, conducted a selection process resulting in Const. Maralee McSherry being awarded the assignment of being Oakley’s handler. Both Oakley and Const. McSherry are scheduled to attend an intense eight-week training program in Winnipeg in the next few months.
Until then, Oakley will be spending time bonding with her new partner, and getting to know her new home as well as her co-workers and the community. WPS is very excited to welcome Oakley to the WPS team.
