WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 77 calls for service during the period of Jan. 9 to 15, resulting in a total of 17 charges. Of the charges, 15 were either traffic related or individuals who failed to comply with a condition of their release or failed to appear in court when required to do so.
In the very early hours of Jan. 13, a reported impaired driving call turned into much more as one adult male was charged with assault with a weapon and failing to comply with a probation order, and the driver of the suspect vehicle was charged with driving while disqualified. The vehicle being driven was also impounded.
With the recent mild daytime temperatures and overnight freezing, the Weyburn police caution motorists to be aware of the extremely icy streets. Reduce your speed according to the road conditions as a vehicle’s stopping distance is greatly increased, even at very slow speeds. Weyburn police received several reports of vehicle collisions during the past week in which road conditions were a factor.
One incident involved a vehicle attempting to make a right turn at an intersection at a very slow speed but slid into another vehicle stopped at the intersection due to the extremely slick ice on the road from recent freezing rain.
Officers responded to a reported theft at a local retail store. An adult female suspect was located and the stolen item was recovered. Charges are pending.
Officers responded to another reported theft from a local business. The suspect was identified from store surveillance video but, at the request of the business owner, no charge was laid as the adult male lives outside of the province and the value of the item was not significant.
