WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to 83 calls for service during the week of August 1-7, resulting in a total of 31 charges. Of the charges, 11 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 19 under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and one under the Vehicle Equipment Regulations (VER).
The majority of charges during the week resulted from traffic related offences. A total of 21 charges were issued for violations, including 11 speed related, four related to vehicle registrations or driver’s licenses, one for using a cell phone while driving, and one for driving while impaired.
The impaired driving charge involved officers of the Weyburn Police Service assisting with a traffic stop initiated by a Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officer.
An adult male and an adult female face a charge of assault following a physical altercation late Monday night. Officers responded to a local residence after receiving a call advising of an assault in progress.
The individuals are known to each other and alcohol is believed to be a factor. Both individuals were released with an upcoming court date.
Officers responded to a call reporting an intoxicated male being belligerent and causing problems in a local drinking establishment. Officers arrived and spoke to the individual who was ultimately arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and lodged in cells for the night. The individual was released in the morning when he was sober. No charges resulted.
Officers were called to a parking lot where another intoxicated male was reportedly causing a disturbance. Officers spoke to the individual who was cooperative with police and was given a ride home. No charges resulted.
Officers also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, excessive noise, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, and calls relating to animals or bylaw concerns.
