The north portion of the Regina General Hospital will soon host a parkade in its current visitor lot.

REGINA — The province has announced a new parkade at Regina General Hospital will be built in the northwest corner of the parking lot.

When completed, the parkade will include a minimum 800 stalls, according to the province’s news release, and will allow the proponent to include commercial space or additional stalls in their proposal.

The next step is for the province to select a lead technical team to take the project through to final planning, procurement, design and construction. A request for proposals is currently open.

Saskatchewan Health Authority is looking at interim parking solutions so there is minimal disruption to parking during construction. The expectation is the new parkade will be built through a partial lease procurement model, which means the structure would be owned, maintained and operated by a third party and then leased to the SHA.

The SHA had been looking at getting a parkade built on the Regina General Hospital lot for some time. Earlier this spring, a site assessment was done on the hospital lot to determine if there were any historic graves underneath the potential parking site.

It was determined there were no historical burials, and the parkade project can proceed. The government says the project is much needed to address safety and security concerns about parking at the hospital.

“Our government values and appreciates health care workers and the vital services they provide to Saskatchewan people,” Health Minister Paul Merriman said in a news release. “We have heard the concerns raised by health care workers, patients and families about the availability and security of parking near the Regina General Hospital and we are pleased to be moving forward with this parkade project.”

“This project is a long time coming and we are pleased to see it move forward,” Regina Northeast MLA Gary Grewal said in a statement. "With another major infrastructure investment, our government is supporting industry while enhancing safety and convenience at the Regina General Hospital."

"Once complete, this parkade will offer a much-needed upgrade to parking services for the Regina General Hospital," Saskatchewan Health Authority acting Vice-President Infrastructure Information and Support Michelle Mula said in a news release. "We look forward to working with the project team to prioritize accessibility, safety and security for staff and patients."
