Measuring divinization and marking on the chimney

On one of the walls in my brother's kitchen are little black lines with dates beside them all the way up the wall. They signify the height of my niece and nephews as they grow up with the corresponding date on it.

When will you be coming back?

I, along with the City, am feeling a wee bit lonely this morning. After enjoying the presence of several thousand visitors, their departure leaves an empty spot.

A man orders three drinks from the bartender. "I have a brother in Australia and one in the States. We made a vow that every Saturday night we'd still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three Guinness Stouts, and we're drinking together.

Defining who we are

Canadians celebrated our 145th birthday this week and I grow more patriotic each year, in a subdued Canuck sort of way, of course.

A famous tight-rope walker stood before a huge crowd; "Do you believe that I can walk across Niagara Falls on this tightrope?" he asked. "Yes!" they shouted. So he did. "Now, do you believe that I can cross pushing a wheelbarrow?" he asked.

Chocolate and the vine

There are some things about which it is best to be ignorant. Take bittersweet chocolate, for example. Of all my culinary sins, overindulgence in chocolate is not one of them but a friend recently introduced me to some mighty powerful temptation.

This past Saturday I was part of a mob that invaded a local store - no violence, though, just lots of smiles and busy staff.

In the 1970's Simon and Garfunkel popularized E.A. Robinson's "Richard Cory", a poem about a rich young man whom everyone admired and envied. The parties on his yacht "made us wish that we were in his place".

Country roads, lead me home?

It's confession time. Although this took place nearly twenty years ago, this is the first time I have ever revealed this deep dark secret. The other person involved promised she'd never squeal on me and I believe she kept her word.
