UNITY – This past year, members of the Unity Knights of Columbus council have been fulfilling one of the pillars of their organization.
Based on the four principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism, the Unity council have been able to help many groups in and around the Unity area.
The group of men held many fundraisers over the year, starting in January with Raise the Buoy. Jason Goring was the lucky winner, taking home $1,925.
The Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus holds an annual charity appeal draw, where Unity members join in selling tickets around the community. A portion of the ticket sales remains in the community, where the members of the Unity council donated a little over $1,600 to the Unity Food Bank.
In August, the second annual bunnock tournament saw 32 teams participating, with well over 300 players and spectators. The winners of event A were Tonya Rehman's team. Topping event B was the Josh Lewin team. The Jason Goring team won event C and event D was won by the Stacey Schmidtz team.
A raffle was also held during the tournament. Travis and Tracy Schaab and Ed Borschneck each won a set of bunnock bones while Frank and Benny Miller won $100 cash.
At the end of each year, the council tallies up their donations and starts making a list of where the funds can be distributed. The council donates back to community groups that create a greater good for the residents of Unity.
This year, more than $10,000 was donated back to the community. On top of the donation to the Unity Food Bank, two $500 bursaries were awarded to graduates Kierra Bosch and Ashlyn Greenwald in June 2023. The Unity Composite High School, Unity Public School and St. Peter’s School all received $1,000. The Unity Community Daycare and the Unity Health Centre also received $1,000 each.
KidSport, Unity Courtesy Car and the Unity Curling Club were recipients of $500 each from the Unity Council.
An additional $1,000 was donated to St. Peter’s School towards their ongoing fundraising for the wheelchair-accessible swing they are planning to purchase.
The Unity K of C appreciate the community support of their fundraisers so they, in turn, can help support the community.
