Curlers of all ages have been finding time to enjoy the Unity Curling Club's ice and lounge.

UNITY — The Unity Curling Club has seen a great start to the year, welcoming new and returning curlers to the ice.

The beginning of the season saw different leagues and programs coming into the club to partake in the sport. Aside from the various leagues starting up, there are programs such as Learn to Curl and Homeschool Curl programs. Each Monday, club members Lloyd Fell and Terry Watt volunteer to teach homeschooled students how to curl. Many of the children are enjoying the sport and the club is happy to see young people taking up the sport.

Students with the junior and senior UCHS curling teams have also been welcomed again to practice with Coach Kyla Snell. There are two junior teams and a mixed senior team.

“We have had a series of exhibition games versus Wilkie and North Battleford in December. We plan to continue to build our skills in the new year and play more games,” said Snell.

Districts for the senior team will be held in Spiritwood, while the junior teams will host districts here in Unity with help from the curling club.

The club also hosted a sturling two-person spiel along with the annual Boxing Day Family Fun Spiel in December.

“The sturling spiel went great. We had 14 teams enter, seven teams from our club along with seven teams from Alberta,” said club manager Sharon Reiter. “There was lots of good camaraderie and curling and we are looking forward to hosting another sturling spiel in Feb,” she adds.

The annual Boxing Day Family Fun Spiel drew ten teams.

“It was great to see families out again,” responded Reiter.

With the new year comes the club’s busiest part of the season. In January, the club is holding a doubles fun spiel Jan. 12 along with the annual Pattison Ag Men’s Open Jan. 18 to 20. Registration is still open for both events.
