NORTH BATTLEFORD - The finals for the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League are almost set, with one series decided and another series close to conclusion.
The Turtleford Tigers are confirmed to be one of the final series teams after a three-game series sweep of the Battleford Beaver Blues.
Turtleford won by scores of 6-3, 6-5 and 4-2.
They now await the winner of the other semifinal series pitting the Meota Combines versus the Radisson Wheatkings. That series has proved more competitive than some people expected.
In the first game Radisson shocked Meota with a 4-3 win. But the Combines came back with an 8-4 win in Radisson and a 6-1 win back in North Battleford for game three on Thursday night.
Boyd Wakelin had two goals and an assist in that third game while Myles Baptiste had a goal and an assist for the Combines.
Game four of the series is in Radisson Saturday night, and game five if necessary would be in North Battleford Sunday.
No dates have been announced yet for the championship series. When it takes place the SPHL will be poised to crown a league champion for the first time since 2019 when Battleford beat Edam in three straight to win the cup.
The last two seasons have seen heavy disruption due to COVID-19. The 2020 series ended after two games with Meota leading two games to none over Battleford, while there was no season in 2021.
