The Bears ran wild in Edmonton Friday night and the Rams couldn’t do much about it.
The University of Regina Rams surrendered 252 yards along the ground in a 30-6 loss to the University of Alberta in what has so far been the biggest blowout in Canada West football this season.
While the , it was a two-headed Golden Bears run game that controlled the game from start to finish, tiring out the Regina defence by keeping it on the field for almost 13 minutes longer than Alberta defence.
Bears' star running back Matthew Peterson rumbled for 116 first half yards, largely on the strength of a 73-yard touchdown run, before leaving with an injury late in the opening 30 minutes. Ope Oshinubi picked right up where Peterson left off, adding another 78 yards and a touchdown.
The Rams were in serious jeopardy of becoming the first Canada West squad to be shut out this season until the final three minutes and 28 seconds when Renzel Arinaza hauled in a 25-yard-touchdown pass for Regina’s only points.
The Rams offence, led by quarterback Noah Pelletier, couldn’t keep pace as a couple of early two-and-outs put them behind early in what turned out to be the lowest offensive output of the season so far for the entire conference.
It was a chippy affair with 155 yards in penalties doled out but a lot of stuff being ignored too.
These two squads, who are now tied in the standings with UBC as well at 2-and-2 for a three-way log-jam in the conference, meet again in late October.
The Rams meanwhile will have an extra day to lick their wounds when they get home from Edmonton before visiting the Manitoba Bisons Saturday, September 28.
