NIPAWIN — Assault and weapons charges against a Nipawin man were stayed Sept. 1.
The charges against Travis Trites, 37, included aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited, two counts of possession of a firearm without a valid license, two counts of unsafe storage of a firearm, and failing to comply with a release order. All charges were stayed in Nipawin Circuit Court.
Trites and four others were charged on May 18 after RCMP received a complaint of an assault at a home on the 100 block of Seymour Street at 3:50 a.m. When police arrived they ordered all occupants to come out and they seized a loaded sawed-off firearm and three more illegally owned firearms from the residence. One man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Hours later, Nipawin RCMP received a separate complaint of a break and enter at the same residence. Police arrested two men after a brief foot chase.
Following these two incidents, police arrested five people.
When the Crown stays charges they have one year to bring the charges back to life. The Crown doesn’t have to tell the court why charges are being stayed. Some reasons for staying charges include witnesses not cooperating or not having a strong enough case to take to trial.
