SASKATOON - A man who attempted to escape into the U.S. after Saskatoon Police issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on second-degree murder charges appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court Aug. 26.
In July 33-year-old Afrah Ali was brought back to Saskatoon from the United States. The United States Border Patrol arrested Ali on Jan. 23, when he was trying to enter their country illegally.
The Saskatoon Police Service Major Crime Section, Canadian Border Services, RCMP Air Services and Provost, and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice worked with U.S. authorities to have Ali extradited to Canada.
In August 2020, Saskatoon Police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Ali’s arrest for shooting and killing 30-year-old Logan Nayneecassum outside Aria Food and Spirits in the 200 block of Slimmon Road.
Saskatoon Police were called to the pub at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2020, for a report of an injured man. First responders found him suffering from a gunshot wound and transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 7, 2022, in Saskatoon Provincial Court.
Ali remains in custody.
The charges against him haven't been proven in court.
