Unity is proud to have been chosen to host the Provincial Zone Bantam Boys' and Girls' Softball Championship. Teams have been practicing and playing since July when teams were selected. They are eager and ready for action this long weekend, looking to win the title of Provincial Zone Champion. Many of these players were also heavily involved in hockey tryouts and volleyball camps and tryouts so their dedication to multi-tasking will pay off this weekend on the diamond. Spectators can look forward to some terrific softball action, as well as all the goodies that are offered at the ball park. Weekend and day passes are available. So if you still want to catch one more ball game or so before the snow flies, the diamonds in Unity will be the place to be.

It doesn't even seem possible the kids are back in school already. That means back to the routines of waking up to an alarm clock, packing lunches, and being organized for those activities after school. Just keep a watchful eye out for those excited little ones heading on their bikes, walking or exiting the buses as they head off to another school season. Unity Public School is hosting parents and students for a welcome back pancake breakfast from 8 - 9 a.m., Sept. 2, sponsored by their school community council.

Remember Sunday, Sept. 18 will be a busy, active day in Unity, with the Candace Heit Memorial Run in the morning (at the golf course) and the Terry Fox Run in the afternoon (at the Anglican Church). Pledge forms for the Terry Fox Run are available at the Credit Union, BMO and the Unity Community Resource Center (UCRC). If you don't want to get pledges, just bring a toonie and join your friends. You will have a choice of two routes, both of which are stroller, bike, scooter and pedestrian friendly. See you on the 18th. For more info call Val at 228-4536.

Minor hockey registration took place at the rink, Sept. 1. There was also an equipment swap for those needing to sell used equipment and those needing to purchase some before the season starts. If you missed registration night, call Curtis Dyck at 228-2101.

The Unity School of Dance has held their registration night and will soon be on the streets with their annual chocolate drive, to help fund some of their expenses.

The high school volleyball tryouts were held this week and USHC will be naming their team on the weekend. They will head straight into league and tournament play from there with Mr. Parker coaching the senior girl's team.

You always can appreciate small-town businesses, which are usually taken for granted, when you attend an event in the city. After hosting my parents' 50th anniversary in Saskatoon this past weekend I was dismayed when, upon having plumbing issues at the venue, we could not find a business to either rent us a portable toilet nor find someone to come on a Saturday afternoon to help us out. Thankfully my nephew worked with a plumber and was able to get his boss to come and help us. I just know, from experience, in our community this would have been looked after within minutes. So that my friends, is reason to appreciate your small town businesses ...

Harvest is now happening. Keep that in mind when travelling the highways as this is a busy time of year for farmers and you will need to slow down and be mindful when passing the equipment you might meet on the highway.

Unity Credit Union will officially be hosting their 70th anniversary celebrations in October. So watch the news for updates on this exciting event for Unity Credit Union.
