SPSA reporting 20 active wildfires as of May 31

SPSA provided an update in a news release May 31 on the ongoing wildfire situation.

REGINA - In their latest update Wednesday, Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is reporting there are 20 active wildfires burning in Saskatchewan.

That is the situation as of 2 p.m. on May 31. Of those, eight are not contained, one is contained, four are seeing crews focus on protecting property, and seven are ongoing assessment.

SPSA is also reporting they continue to support, on behalf of Meadow Lake Tribal Council, approximately 264 evacuees from Patuanak and English River in North Battleford, as well as evacuees from Dillon, Michel Village and St. George’s Hill in Lloydminster.

As well, SPSA reports that approximately 90 people are currently evacuating from the village of La Loche for Regina.

The Northern Village of La Loche is currently under a mandatory evacuation order for those at high risk, and voluntary for all other residents.

SPSA is also reporting Deschambault Lake, Clearwater River Dene Nation, Turnor Lake and Birch Narrows have self-evacuated.

SPSA has indicated they will be providing a full media briefing to reporters on the ongoing wildfire situation on Thursday morning.
