REGINA - More people who were evacuated due to the wildfire situation in northern Saskatchewan have been able to go back to their homes.
Due to improved conditions, the remaining evacuees from the northern communities Ile-a-la-Crosse, Buffalo Narrows, Buffalo River, Dillon, St. George’s Hill and Michel Village have all returned home, according to a news release from the province.
However, Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency continues to support approximately 325 evacuees from Patuanak and English River, who are staying in North Battleford on behalf of Meadow Lake Tribal Council. The province does not have numbers for Deschambault Lake as that community self-evacuated.
According to the province, the provincial wildfire situation has improved since last week. There are now 19 active wildfires as of May 29 at 10 a.m. that day, with the province citing the response efforts by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency as well as favorable weather.
