CYPRESS COUNTY, Alta. – A 21-year-old woman from Swift Current, Sask., and two others from Alberta, have died after a vehicle plunged upside down into an irrigation canal Monday morning.
Redcliff RCMP say that about 1 a.m. they were called to a report that a vehicle had driven off the road and went into the St. Mary’s Irrigation District canal at Highway 523 and Range Road 73 in Cypress County.
There were four people in the vehicle and one was able to get out and go to a nearby home to have 911 called.
The Swift Current woman, along with a 28-year-old man and 21-year-old woman, both from Medicine Hat, were declared deceased at the scene.
Cypress County Fire, along with Medicine Hat Fire Aquatic Rescue and EMS attended the scene. They found the vehicle submerged on its roof. MHFD Aquatic Rescue entered the water and was able to determine the three occupants were still inside the vehicle.
The RCMP Collision Reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation continues. Police say no further details will be released and they offer their condolences to the family and friends of all deceased.
