Yorkton Minor Football is taking player registrations to gauge interest in a season this year.
But, there is still much uncertainty whether there will be a league to play in, or a facility to play at, even if the players show interest.
鈥淣obody knows what鈥檚 happening,鈥� said Roby Sharpe.
Sharpe said meetings are being held to discuss the possibility of a season, but at this point they are simply speculating on possibilities.
As it stands now players would have nowhere to play if a season went forward.
鈥淲e aren鈥檛 allowed to practice ... We鈥檙e not even allowed in the facility,鈥� said Sharpe, adding the minor football clubhouse falls under the jurisdiction of the Good Spirit School Division.
At present the school division, and the provincial governing body for high school sports have not determined whether fall sports such as football will go ahead, noted Sharpe, which further clouds what might happen in terms of any play this year.
What is known at present is that players would face some significant changes if a season goes forward.
鈥淭hey鈥檇 have to show up in gear. There would be no changing in the change rooms,鈥� said Sharpe.
There is speculation the game might evolved from 12-man to nine-man, but Sharpe questioned how having three less players per team on the field 鈥渋s safer.鈥�
The fate of the minor football program lies outside the jurisdiction of the schools, residing under the mandate of Regina Minor Football. Sharpe said there is optimism RMF will go ahead, but that could leave Yorkton teams with a league, but no field.
鈥淚t鈥檚 all speculation,鈥� he reiterated. 鈥淭hings change every second day.鈥�
So, Sharpe said they are compiling a list of players wanting to hit the gridiron in 2020, but are not taking fees at this time, as they await a clearer picture of rules, regulations, and authority decisions. To keep up with YMF see their page on Facebook.
