Over the Family Day long weekend, anglers looking to get a few bites made their way to the Broderick reservoir for the 1st annual fishing derby hosted by Riverbend Co-op, which took place on Saturday, February 18.
The event attracted a large number of participants, with approximately 170 people converging on the ice of the reservoir to see if the fish were biting and hopefully claim some prizes, which were supplied by more than 30 local sponsors.
Hoping to raise awareness of the catch-and-release fishing method, Riverbend also split the registration fees in half, utilizing 50% for the growing first place grand prize, and the other 50% being earmarked for a future community beautification project.
The derby attracted anglers of all ages, with kids as young as ten months old registered, as well as 97-year old Gladys Martin of Dinsmore coming out to take part, perhaps proving that fishing is a sport that doesn't lose your interest, no matter your age.
The winner of the grand prize was Rob Robinson of Saskatoon, who took home $1990.00 for his total weight of fish, which was 6.75 pounds, including one particular jack that came in at a sizable 5.24 pounds.
After the fishing was done for the day, Co-op also hosted a post-derby lunch at the Outlook Legion Hall, which became packed and saw a number of people leave with some giveaway prizes.
Right now, Riverbend is asking for the public's thoughts on which community project the proceeds should be donated to, which amounts to $2000.
