RCMP REPORT: Impaired driver wakes, hits gas, crashes into tree

Police report that an intoxicated male was found sleeping behind the wheel of a vehicle. When the male woke up, he hit the gas causing the vehicle to accelerate, striking a pole, and then coming to a stop in a field.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 68 calls from Oct. 4 to Oct. 12, including a report that a male dumped six wheelbarrow loads of leaves on the caller’s lawn in Preeceville. Police continue to investigate.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 68 calls from Oct. 4 to Oct. 12, some of which included: two 911 Act calls, two animal calls, one assault, one Coroners Act call, one criminal harassment, three failures to appear in court, two false alarms, two Fire Prevention Act calls, one fraud, one impaired operation of a motor vehicle, one Mental Health Act call, three mischiefs, one other provincial call, two suspicious persons, one theft, one traffic collision, 38 traffic offenses, four uttering threats, and one wellbeing check.

Leaves dumped on yard

On Oct. 12, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report that a male dumped six wheelbarrow loads of leaves on the caller’s lawn in Preeceville. Police continue to investigate.

Impaired driver hits tree

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report on Oct. 9 that a vehicle was in the ditch along Highway 9 by Ebenezer. A male was found sleeping behind the wheel of the vehicle. When the male woke up, he hit the gas causing the vehicle to accelerate, striking a pole, and then coming to a stop in a field. The male was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The male provided breath samples of 140mg% and 150mg%. The legal limit is 80mg%.

Public fight

On Oct. 8, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a 911 call where a caller reported a male and female fighting at the Highway 9 and 5 junction. Both the male and female were later located at a residence in Canora but refused to co-operate with the investigation.

Power line mischief

On Oct. 7, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report that the power line was tampered with at the Buchanan Co-op. Police continue to investigate.

Good Lake fire

On Oct. 6, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to assist the Canora Fire Department with a structure fire in the RM of Good Lake. It was determined the fire originated in the ceiling area and was caused by the wood burning stove. The fire was contained and the home was not lost.
