CANORA —The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 105 calls from Dec. 14 to Jan. 4, some of which included:
- five 911 calls,
- two assaults,
- one assault with a weapon,
- one being unlawfully in a dwelling,
- three breaches of peace,
- one break-and-enter,
- one Cannabis Act call,
- one criminal harassment,
- one disturbing the peace,
- one failure to comply with conditions,
- two lost and found,
- one Mental Health Act call,
- eight mischiefs,
- two operating vehicles while impaired,
- three other provincial calls,
- one person reported missing,
- two sexual assaults,
- three suspicious persons,
- one vehicle theft,
- two thefts under $5,000,
- four traffic collisions,
- 30 traffic offenses,
- one Trespass Act call,
- four uttering threats,
- seven wellbeing checks,
- and three prisoners.
Truck does damage at sports grounds
On Dec. 18, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a white Ford four-door pickup truck driving recklessly at the sport grounds in Canora. The truck damaged trees and fencing around one of the ball diamonds.
“Our community’s youth sports facilities should not be subject to this,” Canora Leisure Services wrote on their Facebook page. “This is thousands of dollars in damages that will need to be repaired.”

Sexual assault conviction
A man appeared in Yorkton Provincial Court on Dec. 15 and was sentenced to 42 months of jail for a sexual assault that occurred in Canora in August of 2020. The man was also given a 10-year firearms prohibition and was ordered to give his DNA to the National DNA databank.
No longer welcome
On Dec. 15, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a call to assist a man with retrieving his personal effects from a residence in Canora. When police arrived at the residence, the caller’s clothes were observed to have been thrown on the driveway. Further police assistance was no longer required.
Drunk in a residence
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Dec. 17 to an unwanted person call in Sturgis. Police attended and arrested an intoxicated man inside the residence.
Returned to crime scene
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a theft at the Gateway Co-op Liquor Store in Canora on Dec. 18. Police identified the thief and later arrested the man when he returned to the store the following day. The man was charged with theft under $5,000 and was remanded into custody.
Arrest after multiple thefts
On Dec. 19, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a theft at the Gateway Co-op liquor store in Buchanan. The investigation determined the male suspect had stolen from the store on four separate occasions. The man was arrested and charged with four counts of theft under $5,000.
Disturbance and arrest
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Dec. 20 to a report of a disturbance in Preeceville. Police learned an assault occurred and that the man was in violation of his conditional sentence order. The man was arrested for assault and remanded into custody.
Intoxicated at the wheel
On Dec. 23 at 4:10 a.m., a parked vehicle idling on Whitesand Drive in Canora was reported to the Canora/Sturgis RCMP. Police located the vehicle and observed a man sleeping behind the wheel. The manshowed obvious signs of being impaired by alcohol.
The man was arrested and he provided two breath samples of 200mg% and 210mg%. He was charged with having care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired and having care and control of a motor vehicle while being impaired, with a blood alcohol level equal to or over 80mg%. The man's vehicle was impounded for 60 days and his drivers’ licence was also suspended.
Stealing from family
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Dec. 26 to a break-and-enter complaint in Canora. Police learned the caller’s daughter had forced entry into their residence and stole their vehicle and a cell phone. The woman was arrested and charged with break-and-enter.
Nowhere to go
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a disturbance complaint in Canora on Dec. 27. It was reported that an unknown woman was banging on the door of the caller’s home. Police attended and determined the woman was under the influence of drugs and had nowhere to go. Police assisted the woman with finding a safe place for her to stay for the night.
Imaginary theft
On Dec. 31, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a call from an intoxicated man who reported two snowmobiles were stolen from his property in the RM of Sliding Hills. Police investigated the matter and determined one snowmobile had been sold and the other was in storage.
Walking traffic hazard
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received multiple calls on Jan. 2 concerning an intoxicated man who was obstructing traffic on Norway Road in Canora and had walked into a pole. Police located and arrested the man for causing a disturbance. The man was held in cells for his own safety until he was sober.
