CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 36 calls from Jan. 18 to Jan. 25, some of which included:
- two assaults,
- three 911 calls,
- four animal calls,
- one extortion,
- one failure to comply with conditions,
- two fraud,
- two harassing communications,
- four Mental Health Act calls,
- two mischiefs
- one other provincial call,
- one suspicious person,
- two traffic collisions,
- eight traffic offenses,
- one uttering threats, and
- two prisoners.
Disturbing texts
On Jan. 24, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a report of threats made over text messages. The caller reported receiving threatening text messages showing pictures of dead bodies in an attempt to extort $2,500. The threats came from an unknown person and there was no risk to the caller.
Service worker mistaken for robber
A caller to the Canora/Sturgis RCMP on Jan. 19 reported a suspicious person in Sturgis trying to get into an ATM. The suspicious person was found driving on Highway 9. When police questioned the man, they learned he was not trying to rob the ATM but worked for a company that services them.
Well-being check finds intruder
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to check on the well-being of a woman in Sturgis on Jan. 19. Police located a man in the home who was not supposed to be there. The man was arrested and charged for failing to abide with his court ordered release conditions to not to be at the home. The man was remanded into custody.
Drunken assault
On Jan. 19, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a disturbance complaint at a residence in Canora. Police responded to the call and learned an intoxicated man had assaulted two individuals in the home. The man was arrested and charged with two counts of assault.
