MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM -- The Vanier Vikings and Central Cyclones are into the playoffs at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association 4A boys volleyball championship in Moose Jaw.
The Vikings find themselves off to a perfect start, winning all four of their round robin games Friday and Saturday. That included a 25-20, 25-22 win over Melfort, 25-18, 21-25, 16-14 battle with Melville and 15-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory over Meadow Lake to wrap up play on the first day of competition.
Vanier then finished the preliminary round Saturday with a 25-11, 25-11 win over Kindersley to take first in their pool.
That sent the Vikings into the playoff round, where they’re to face Yorkton Sacred Heart at 12:30 p.m. at Central.
The Central Cyclones also had a perfect Friday, defeating Humboldt 25-18, 25-22, downing Lumsden 25-11, 25-21 and getting past Yorkton Sacred Heart 25-13, 25-18.
Things didn’t go as well for the tournament host and reigning city champions in their final round robin game Saturday morning, as they dropped a 21-25, 25-18, 15-12 decision to North Battleford John Paul II, who finished first in the pool with a perfect record.
Central faces Melfort in the quarter-final at 1:30 p.m. at Central.
The hope of seeing two Moose Jaw teams in the provincial final won’t come to pass, as the winners of the Vanier and Central quarter-finals will play in the semifinal at 3 p.m. at Central.
The other first round playoff games see John Paul II taking on Meadow Lake at 12:30 p.m. and Melville battling Humboldt at 1:30 p.m., with both those games at Sask Polytech. The winners there will advance to the semifinal at 3 p.m. at the same gym.
The semifinal winners will play for gold at 5:30 p.m., with the losers dropping to the bronze medal game at 4:30 p.m., with both those games at Sask Polytech.
