WEYBURN – A number of special activities and events are scheduled for Culture Days on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Credit Union Spark Centre, along with an artist reception on Friday evening at the Weyburn Art Gallery.
“I love Culture Days,” said Regan Lanning, curator for the Weyburn Arts Council. “It’s a great nation-wide program that invites people to experience the many forms of culture present in their community.”
Artist Hanna Yokozawa Farquharson will take part in a talk and reception on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., for her exhibition, “Gaia Symphony”, which is on display until Oct. 30 in the Weyburn Art Gallery.
Activities on Saturday range from a community mural, a dancing showcase, a cricket try-out and a paint-your-flag activity.
There will be an activity for residents to paint a flag, either the Canadian flag or a flag from your country of origin, or both. The activity will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Spark Centre classrooms.
“Come take part in creating this paper tapestry representing the diverse origins of our city,” said Lanning.
She noted that the finished flags will be installed in the hallway near the Weyburn Art Gallery. The activity is free, and there is no need to preregister.
A demonstration of cultural dancing from southern India will be put on by members of the Malayalee community at the Credit Union Spark Centre’s mini-gym from 11 a.m. to noon.
The dances are from the state of Kerala on the southwestern Malabar coast of India. With Malayalee culture being over 5,000 years old, there are more than 50 traditional folk dances for the group to choose from.
The collaborative mural will be using a photograph by Dallas Burnett of Weyburn, depicting the Souris River and Soo Line Historical Museum.
The activity will recreate the scene by dividing the image into smaller squares, and members of the public can contribute by painting one of the squares.
The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. in one of the classrooms at the Credit Union Spark Centre, and is free, but preregistration is required. Call the centre at 306-848-3480, or use the City’s online booking service.
A second art exhibit reception is planned as part of Culture Days, and will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., entitled “The Degenhart Effect”, at the Weyburn Art Gallery.
