WEYBURN - As mentioned in one of my previous columns, my siblings and I are gathering next weekend for a family reunion.
At my request, I’ve been appointed to plan all the meals and organize the food for this celebration. Cooking is something I love to do.
With attendees from five to 75 years old, and a few of those having dietary restrictions, I had to plan a variety of meals and options.
Feeding 20 people for three days seems like a big chore, but then I consider our farming community, who feed as many or more on a daily basis during the harvest season.
Often times those meals are prepared and delivered to the field in order to save valuable time when taking the crops off.
Cooking for and serving an even larger crowd at weddings, community and corporate events and celebrations definitely takes good planning, but making those massive portions taste as if it were an intimate family dinner takes skill.
Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending the wedding of my co-worker, manager and friend Andrea’s daughter at Mainprize Park.
Angelo and his team from McKenna Hall served the tastiest turkey dinner with all the trimmings. What a treat to have a traditionally fall meal in the middle of summer!
There were many compliments shared at our table about the wonderful food, and the conversation turned to great cooks and caterers in Weyburn.
You absolutely CANNOT have a conversation about feeding crowds without Myrna McFadden’s name being mentioned.
Not only are her Myrna Burgers legendary, she was an absolute pro at feeding crowds, whether it was a team of hungry hockey players, or a large scale event in town.
Weyburn has an abundance of great cooks, bakers and caterers. They have a passion for cooking, and it shows.
Whether you are feeding a few or many, in the field or in a banquet hall, make your meals memorable. Make them with love.
