WEYBURN – The Weyburn Red Wings won their game over the Nipawin Hawks on Friday night, and lost their match against the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night to split their weekend matches.
On Saturday, the Red Wings were blanked by the Mustangs 5-0 as they could not solve their goaltender Steven Bacovsky. Weyburn’s Joseph Young was in net for the full 60 minutes, facing 34 shots, while Bacovsky had 19 shots on net.
The Mustangs were one for eight on the powerplay, while the Red Wings were 0 for seven chances on the powerplay.
On Friday, it was a different story, as the Red Wings doubled up on the Hawks 4-2, with the first two goals for Weyburn coming in the first period.
Austyn Hansen scored at 11 minutes to put Weyburn on the board, with assists from Nicholas Kovacs and Shayde Peterson, and Davis Chorney made it 2-0 six minutes later, with assists from Jacob Jakusz and Nikolas Sombrowski.
Weyburn added to their total with captain Dante Ballarin scoring at 13:41 of the second frame, assisted by Sombrowski and Jakob Kalin on the powerplay, and Simon Pollock scored unassisted in the last minute of the period.
Nipawin’s two goals came in the third, from Joel Mabin, unassisted, and from Andrew Schaab on the powerplay, assisted by Braxton Buckberger.
Young was in net for the full 60 minutes, stopping 27 of 29 shots, while the Hawks had Chase Hamm in for the first two periods, stopping 17 of 21 shot, and Dylan Lacroix played for the third period, stopping four shots.
The Red Wings will be in Yorkton to take on the Terriers on Tuesday, Oct. 19, and the Hawks are in Wilcox today, Oct. 17, to face the Notre Dame Hounds.
