WEYBURN – The Weyburn Hurricanes attended the Provincial Finals in Saskatoon this past weekend hosted by the Saskatoon Waterpolo Club in affiliation with Waterpolo Saskatchewan. The two-day tournament consisted of teams from Estevan, Weyburn, Regina and Saskatoon clubs in all categories from U10 mixed rosters to Open Men’s and Open Women’s teams.

The U10 mixed category Hurricanes brought home provincial gold, which was the first medal and trophy for any Weyburn club since 2016. The team of seven players went undefeated in the round robin and played Estevan in the final, winning 9-2.

Four additional swimmers also competed this weekend as alternates with a few of the other clubs. Jaxton Burnett and Nash Warren played for the U13 boys, Sawyer Tollefson for the U13 girls and Jacob Gill for the U15 boys, and  all performed far above the club’s expectations.

“Megan and Mason Schick, our coaches for the U10 ‘Minis’ program, have worked very methodically with these young male and female swimmers and have taken them from a beginner level program to a very organized and coordinated team with a fantastic sport ethic,” said Head Coach and Club President Dave Edgerton.

Megan is in her second year with the club and Mason joined this season as assistant coach for one of the most important age categories.

“We are very proud of how our players worked together as a team. It was a true showcase of all the skills they learned throughout the year with everything coming together when it mattered most,” said coach Megan.

Coach Dave noted “the provincial U10 program was developed by the Weyburn Club in 2016 by former coach and club president Mike Grieve, and it was adopted province wide in 2017. It has become an excellent path to ensure the success and longevity of our sport across the province, as swimmers who progress to older age categories are replaced by new members eager to learn to swim and develop their skills in a team environment.”

The season from the Community League Waterpolo comes to a close at the end of March, and the Provincial and National leagues are wrapping up their year-end final competitions. The Saskatchewan Waterpolo program has become a leader in Canada for their development program as well as the number of national and international athletes.

The Weyburn Club has registration in September with practices two days a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from September to March. They also allow a trial period before any payment of fees is required. If anyone is interested, reach out to the club via their Facebook Page (Weyburn Hurricanes Waterpolo). There are limited registration numbers every year.
