WEYBURN – Soccer players from throughout the province, both boys and girls of a wide range of age levels, converged on Weyburn's Credit Union Spark Centre from Friday evening to Sunday, to try out for the provincial level Forge elite soccer teams.
The provincial-level teams are being put together to play against Regina and Saskatoon.
Tyler Hillstead, a soccer coach and technical director for Weyburn Soccer, said the soccer clubs around the province decided to go this route, to allow the elite players of each team and community to be able to stay playing for their home team, but also give them an opportunity to play at a higher level of competition.
He noted there are a few Weyburn players at a lot of the age levels, and attributed the CU Spark Centre as making that possible, as soccer can now be played year-round in Weyburn, giving players the opportunity to develop their skills to a higher level.
Coaches for Forge put the players through various drills and scrimmage games to test the skill levels of the players wishing to play for the provincial team.
