WEYBURN - The visiting Estevan Bruins ruined the season home opener for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings on Saturday night, coming away with a 6-3 win.
The first period was dominated by the Bruins, with four goals, including a short-handed marker.
The first two goals were from Caelan Fitzpatrick, assisted by Antoine St. Onge and Owen Simmons on the first one, and Cody David and Nolan Jones in the short-handed effort. St. Onge scored on an assist from Billy Sowa and Aleksa and Babic, and Kade Runke rounded out the period on an assist from Olivier Pouliot.
Weyburn’s own Braden Birnie scored the lone goal of the second period to get the Wings on the board, assisted by Shayde Peterson and Graham Skinner.
Estevan added two more in the third, from Mark Rumsey (assists to Owen Simmons and Fitzpatrick) and Brandon Ambrozik, assisted by St. Onge and Lucas Eagle.
The Red Wings came back with two more of their own, with Davis Chorney assisted by Ty Mason, and team captain Dante Ballarin on the powerplay, assisted by Ian Maier and Jacob Jakusz.
The Bruins’ net was guarded by Boston Bilous, facing 29 shots on the night, while Joseph Young was in net for the first period for the Red Wings, facing 13 shots, and Dazza Mitchell handled the last two periods, facing 16 shots.
