The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings season has been delayed until Thursday, Sept. 30, when they will travel to Yorkton for their season opener, after the home-and-home games against the Melville Millionaires were postponed due to COVID.
A statement from SJHL league commissioner Bill Chow on Thursday said, “The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the Melville Millionaires announce that until further notice, the Melville Millionaires’ games are postponed.
“The postponement is due to positive COVID case associated to the Melville Millionaires. After consultation with local health officials, the Melville Millionaires in conjunction with the SJHL are exercising extreme caution and considering the health and safety for all players, coaches and staff of the teams, as well as the fans and the respective communities that the players live in.
The decision for postponement did not come easy, but we all feel that this is the best decision to make at this time to mitigate the potential risks. The SJHL will work with the Melville Millionaires and teams affected by the postponement in rescheduling and will announce when that information is available.”
The Red Wings will play the Terriers on Sept. 30, and then will host their Highway 39 rivals, the Estevan Bruins, at Crescent Point Place on Saturday, Oct. 2, for their season home opener.
