CARLYLE - Painting of the ice and rings has been completed and the Carlyle Curling Club will be opening this weekend for another year.
Recently, the Observer had the opportunity to talk to club president Justine Kyle and treasurer Michael Lothian.
Because of provincial health restrictions, including owning a permit to sell alcoholic beverages, all curlers and fans must be double vaccinated to enter the premises. The club itself has also decided on full vaccination so that masks do not have to be worn on the playing surface.
On Oct. 30 and Nov. 1, the club is welcoming all existing and prospective curlers to come out and throw a few rocks. This event is called “wobble week.” Regular Thursday night curling starts Nov. 4 and Monday nights begin Nov. 8. On Friday nights, the club is going to try a family doubles night starting at 7 p.m.
Both Kyle and Lothian are excited about the upcoming season.
“Last year, we only had three weeks of curling and the season was a complete write-off,” said Lothian. “Let’s hope things go better this year.“
The Carlyle Curling Club consists of approximately 75 members. They hold their annual family Boxing Day tournament and in early January have an annual cash bonspiel. February brings the Oilmen’s and in early March they hold their annual open bonspiel. A year-ending fun spiel usually takes place St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
The curling club held a very successful golf tournament Sept. 25 with 72 golfers participating. For 2021-22, interest appears high and teams and individuals are already starting to register. Please contact the Carlyle Curling Club either on their Facebook page, or email them at [email protected].
