WEYBURN – Games and activities were held at the Weyburn Public Library to mark Family Literacy Day on Thursday, and a number of classes in schools took part with a live presentation by an author online.
The theme across the province was “Learning in the Great Outdoors”.
Outdoor activities were set up in the area behind the Weyburn library, where one of the families to come out was Leslie Richards and her children, Peter, Maggie, Cecilia and Teresa, who are home-schooled.
Going along with that was an online presentation by author Bernice Johnson-Laxdal and co-author and illustrator Miriam Körner, who shared stories and read from their Saskatchewan Book Award winning book, “When the Trees Crackle with Cold: A Cree Calendar”.
Hundreds of families and classrooms watched from around the province, with over 16,000 children estimated to have joined in.
One of those classrooms was the Grade 3 class at St. Michael School, with teacher Raylene Ryan putting the livestream onto a screen in front of the class.
