WEYBURN – There are many negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic than health-related impacts, but many of these are effects that the citizens of Weyburn and surrounding areas could do something about.
The impact of the pandemic has been negatively felt by service groups and volunteer organizations, along with businesses and schools, and most any other group that used to meet together for fun or for service.
Some of these service organizations are ones that have had a great and positive influence on the community, and have provided amenities and facilities for the enjoyment of citizens, not to mention greatly improving the quality of life for people of all ages.
Think of what an organization like the Quota Club has done in the city and area over their many years of service. Among their contributions have been organizing community events like the annual Festival of Carols, a favourite for many people as it kicks off the Christmas season in Weyburn by providing an opportunity for schools, churches and community choirs to perform.
They have contributed to the children’s library at the Weyburn Public Library, including a toy-lending library, as well as buying and donating FM hearing systems for the schools in the city, which greatly improves the ability of children to hear their teachers properly.
Thus it is sad to learn that the Quota Club is disbanding, but thankfully some of their premier events will be taken on by groups like the Rotary Club, who will do the Carol Festival.
Another outstanding organization are the Young Fellows, a unique service organization to Weyburn that will be celebrating their centennial this year. The list of contributions to Weyburn is very, very long, and includes the Don Mitchell playground and spray park, among many others.
What can people do to help?
For the organizations which are trying to continue to be of service and help in Weyburn, they could use volunteers, and could always use support for any fundraising ventures they have. The Young Fellows, for one, recently had their Christmas tree lot, and will be having an online auction this spring, so consider donating to that and supporting it when it comes up.
The Rotary Club has had good success with different fundraisers, and will be trying to continue with campaigns, as will other groups. The common denominator with all of them is the need for volunteers, and for support from the community.
Sure, there’s COVID around, but we need to learn to live with it and carry on with our lives – and a big part of our lives are the joys and giving of our service groups. Let’s make sure they can continue to uplift the quality of life in Weyburn and area.
