WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 81 calls for service during the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, resulting in a total of eight charges. Of the charges, four were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, three under the Traffic Safety Act, and one under the Cannabis Control Act. In addition to the charges, three driver’s license suspensions and vehicle impounds were also issued during the week.
The Weyburn Police received numerous scam-related calls during the week. The scam calls varied in nature, including paying some kind of fee to claim your winnings in the STARS Lottery, or reverse an incorrect or fraudulent charge on your Visa or Amazon account, or avoid being arrested for an illegal package that was intercepted at the border by the Canada Border Services Agency.
These scam calls are very popular and occurring very frequently right now. Do not give out any banking or financial information to anyone over the phone unless you are absolutely certain of who it is, and that it is for a legitimate service or purpose that you want and approve of.
‘Tis the season to enjoy the festivities and be merry. Keep your family and others safe by planning a safe ride to and from your destination. A few drivers got a reminder of the consequences this past weekend.
A driver who failed to wear his seatbelt got more than he bargained for during the lunch hour on Friday. Officers on patrol noticed the infraction and conducted a traffic stop which resulted in the driver receiving a driver’s license suspension and having his vehicle impounded after testing positive for cannabis. An additional charge of impaired driving is pending further investigation.
On Saturday evening, a driver who failed to stop at a stop sign now finds himself facing a charge of impaired driving. The driver was arrested and released with an upcoming court date, along with receiving an immediate driver’s license suspension and having his vehicle impounded for 30 days.
A traffic stop conducted Sunday afternoon resulted in another driver receiving a driver’s license suspension and having his vehicle impounded after testing positive for cannabis. This driver also faces the likelihood of an additional charge of impaired driving pending further investigation.
Police also responded to a variety of other calls including several domestic disputes or disturbances. Officers were able to successfully mediate these calls without further incident or charges.
