WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 95 calls for service during the week of Sept. 12-18, resulting in a total of 16 charges. Of the charges, seven were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, seven under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), one under the Vehicle Equipment Regulations (VER), and one under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act (AGRA).
The majority of the Criminal Code charges, five of the seven, resulted from individuals who either failed to comply with a court order, or a condition of their release.
On Saturday, police received a RID (Report Impaired Drivers) call advising of a vehicle swerving all over the road. Officers located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested and charged for impaired driving. Thanks to the observations of a vigilant member of the community, an impaired driver was removed from the road.
Officers conducting a traffic stop on Sunday discovered the vehicle was bearing a license plate that didn’t belong to the vehicle. The vehicle was ultimately found to be unregistered and the driver had a suspended driver’s license. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was charged accordingly.
Officers responded to a medical emergency to assist EMS personnel with an individual experiencing a suspected overdose. The individual was attended to, and transported to the Weyburn General Hospital by EMS for further medical attention.
Police responded to the report of an intoxicated person causing a disturbance in public as he was yelling at other people as they walked by. Police located the intoxicated male who was found to have open alcohol. Police attempted to speak to him but he fled. A short foot chase ensued and the male was ultimately arrested for being drunk in public, as well as charged for unlawfully possessing alcohol in public.
During regular court session on Tuesday, three individuals failed to attend court as required, resulting in all three being charged accordingly and having warrants issued for their arrest.
Many calls for service during the week were traffic related, including one involving the report of vehicles driving erratically in a parking lot. Officers located the suspect vehicles and spoke to the drivers regarding their actions. Charges are pending in relation to this matter. Other calls for service during the week varied, including reports of theft, missing persons, harassing communications, and suspicious persons.
