WEYBURN – The Soo Line Cruisers car club in Weyburn made a Christmas donation of $400 to the Weyburn Salvation Army on Wednesday morning.

The funds were presented by vice-president Joe Ganczar to Shannon Fodchuk, community ministries coordinator, and Cassy Baumgartner, family services.

The money will be used to help stock the food bank, which is in need of more supplies of all kinds, particularly non-perishable food items.

Fodchuk noted that the use of the food bank by clients is up by 13 per cent from last year, and the need always increases around the Christmas holiday time.

The Salvation Army is still taking registrations of families with children for the Adopt-a-Family program, or individuals or couples with no children who need Christmas assistance, with the deadline to register on Friday, Nov. 25.

The Adopt-a-Family program will provide toys and food items for the Christmas meal, and the Christmas assistance program will help with the meal.

There is still a need for groups or individuals to step up to sponsor a family or individual in the Adopt-a-family program.

The Christmas kettles program will start off on Thursday, Dec. 1, and this year the store locations are at Wal-Mart and the Wholesale Club. The campaign has a goal of $20,000 this year, said Fodchuk.

Volunteers are needed to fill the schedule for manning the kettles throughout December. Those interested can call the Salvation Army or stop by their office on Fourth Street to see the schedule for when they are able to volunteer to take care of a kettle this season.
