WEYBURN – The kids summer lunch program began on Monday, provided by the Salvation Army in Weyburn, and will be offered five days a week throughout July and August.
The serving area will be set up in the parking lot at Souris School, and the lunches are available from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. each day.
The Salvation Army is making about 100 lunches per day, and Shannon Fodchuk noted they had a big response from families right from the first day.
She said they are full up for volunteers for July, but have a few days available in August when volunteers are needed.
Also, the lunch each day is sponsored by a business, group or family, and there are a few sponsorship spots still available right now, added Fodchuk.
The need for volunteers varies as well, she said. “Some volunteers help make the lunches, and some will also come and help serve them. They don’t have to, it’s about what they would like to do to help.”
If anyone wants to find out what days are open for volunteering, or what sponsorship spots are available, contact Fodchuk at the Salvation Army office at 306-842-2280, or message them from their Facebook page.
Meantime, as staff are typically busy in the mornings getting the lunches ready, they are making the food bank available in the afternoons, and clients can come in and choose their own food items rather than getting a prepacked hamper, said Fodchuk, noting that the demand on the food bank is still very strong right now.
She noted a boost for this summer is a donation from the NSWB law firm, who are providing water and Gatorade at the Salvation Army for whoever wants it.
“If you’re downtown and it’s really hot out, and you need to cool down, just come in and get some water or some Gatorade,” said Fodchuk.
