Regina man accused of assault with katana not sure who he is

Judge orders mental health assessment.

REGINA – A very confused man appeared in Regina Provincial Court this morning - so confused that he wasn’t even quite sure what his name was.

Judge M.J. Hinds attempted several times to confirm the man’s name by asking the question, “are you Gregory Bellegarde?”

“I’m not right in the mind,” came the response from the prisoner’s box. “I don’t know.”

Regardless, Judge Hinds read the charge Bellegarde was appearing in court on, that of assault with a weapon - specifically, a katana.

“I don’t understand what you’re talking about, your honour,” Bellegarde said, interrupting Judge Hinds during proceedings. “I’m done here.”

Bellegarde insisted that he had a mental health concern, but when asked by Judge Hinds what that might be, the man replied, “I don’t know,’ and requested seeing a doctor.

Ultimately, Bellegarde was remanded into custody until June 19 and a mental health services assessment was ordered.

While seated during the proceedings, Bellegarde had great difficulty leaving the prisoner’s box, requiring the assistance of deputy sheriffs to carry him back to cells.
