WEYBURN – A longtime community volunteer and former manager of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, Larry Heggs, was declared the winner of the by-election for the City of Weyburn council.
He led with a total of 437 votes, followed by 325 votes for Trevor Tessier, 170 for Dana Pretzer, and 75 for Brandon Tichkowsky.
Of his total, 145 votes were cast in the advance polls, plus 292 on voting day at the Credit Union Spark Centre, garnering 43 per cent of the votes.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do forever,” said Heggs after the vote tally was announced online from City Hall.
“This has been part of the plan, part of my dream. I absolutely think being involved in the community is the only way for the community to be successful, and I look forward to help make it better,” he said.
Heggs noted it was a close race with the other candidates, and commended all of the candidates for stepping forward to put their name forward for council.
“I think these are great adversaries. I certainly look forward to working with city council, and with members of the community to help build a stronger community,” said Heggs.
The by-election was held to fill the vacancy left by seven-term councillor Dick Michel, who had to step aside due to health concerns.
These voting numbers are considered unofficial, and the official results will be released on Friday, June 2 at 2 p.m. Heggs will be sworn in as the new city councillor at the next meeting, on Monday, June 12.
