WEYBURN - There were several residential construction projects and two commercial projects ongoing in Weyburn through the month of August, according to the City of Weyburn’s building department.
The department issued 10 building permits in August with a total construction value of $990,500, bringing the total so far in 2021 to 46 building permits, with a value of $5,995,700.
This compares to a year ago when the City had issued 36 building permits as of the end of August, with a total construction value of $7,617,000.
Of the projects for this year, four were for detached garages, one was to close in a carport, two were for exterior upgrades and one was to build a new sun deck.
The commercial projects included a new plumbing shop in the former Home Hardware building, and to convert a greenhouse to multi-use floor space.
In the Weyburn Builds program, the City has issued 16 building permits so far this year compared to three a year ago.
• In other council business, the City is moving ahead with tax enforcement on 13 properties that still have 2020 taxes outstanding.
The property owners had received a six-month notice in June and have not paid the taxes, so the City will now send a letter to the Provincial Mediation Board to request consent of title.
The mediation board will contact the property owners to work out payment arrangements, and if no payments are made, the board will then give permission to the City to take title of the property.
The tax bills range from $2,217 up to $8,908, and total $69,564 altogether.
• The City’s new Official Community Plan and zoning bylaw had been reviewed by the provincial government, and a number of amendments and corrections are needed to be made before it can be put into place.
There were also several recommendations to correct or clarify the terms or language used to make the document easier to understand and use. First reading of the amended OCP was made, and it will be open for comments or views from the public before being passed in its final form.
