Bowl for Kids Sake raises $18,211

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn (BBBSW) concluded its 16th annual Bowl for Kids Sake event on April 9.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn (BBBSW) concluded its 16th annual Bowl for Kids Sake event on April 9. The organization's only fundraiser proved once again that the citizens and businesses of Weyburn are tremendously generous and supportive of mentoring programs and services.

"We were fortunate this year to meet and beat our goal of $18,211," said Executive Director Amy Mohr. "It is truly wonderful to witness community members participate in the event in so many ways".

This year BBBSW piloted Wii Bowling at St. Michael's School.

"We wanted to include the younger generation in the fun and excitement of Bowl for Kids Sake, and Wii Bowling has been used by other Big Brother Big Sister agencies in Canada, so we thought we would give it a try," commented Mohr.

Each homeroom competed to raise funds and then teams of four to six students bowled during their gym class or lunch period on April 5. Prizes were awarded for highest team score, most money raised and best team spirit.

"Everyone had a great time and we are grateful for the support we received from St. Michael's teachers, families and students," said Mohr.

Another new endeavour this year was the Bowl for Kids Sake Banker Challenge. The TD,

Credit Union, Scotiabank, CIBC and BMO banks all competed against each other to raise funds for the event. Some of the banks held bake sales and various other fundraisers.

One of the most exciting campaigns was the CIBC "Pie in the Face Fundraiser." Tickets were sold for $10 and on April 1 and five brave CIBC employees faced the pies. After many pies, lots of laughs and a big clean up, the CIBC employees raised a lot of money for BBBSW. As well, Weyburn Credit Union got into the fundraising spirit in a big way, by winning the Banker Challenge and raising over $2,100.

"BBBSW is extremely thankful for the support we have received during the Bowl for Kids Sake event," said Mohr. "Thank you to the BBBSW board members, volunteers, bowlers, corporate sponsors, silent auction supporters and everyone who helped to make this event successful. The funds raised will increase the quality of life for many deserving children".
