ESTEVAN - Saskarc, an Oxbow-based structural and custom steel fabrication company that does work throughout North America, is continuing with its expansion efforts by opening a location in Estevan.
Jodi Evans, who is the executive assistant to the company’s general manager, said the facility opened in August. Located at the former Estevan Brick Plant site in southeast Estevan, steel fabrication was being commercially produced from Estevan by the end of August.
The location started off as a small team of three permanent employees, and additional staff members go there from Oxbow as required, but Saskarc anticipates the permanent staffing levels to quickly grow in Estevan over the coming months.
Saskarc is expanding into Estevan because it is a larger centre, while still close to the company’s head office, and is accessible to the local labour pool.
Also a factor in the decision was the availability of good real estate and facilities. The Brick Plant site was selected because there is a large, newer fabrication facility there that fit the expansion requirements Saskarc was looking for – sufficient property, large open shop, overhead cranes, etc.
This location will be focused on structural steel fabrication, rather than the large complex projects that Evans said many have seen come out of the Oxbow location.
So far, the City and RM of Estevan have been very supportive and have welcomed Saskarc to Estevan, she said.
Over the past 12 months, Saskarc has extensively expanded, adding additional capacity in Oxbow where their head office and main fabrication and coating facilities are located. It has also opened a site in Edmonton, and implemented field offices at two locations in the U.S., in Lynchburg, Va., and Shallowater, Tex., to support expansion into the U.S. market.
Now with over 70,000 square feet under roof and 20 acres, Saskarc has expanded to take on large projects across North America.
The company has been operating since 1991.
