CARLYLE - For the past 15 years, the Gordon F. Kells High School has held an annual food drive to support the local foodbank.
Although centred in Carlyle, the foodbank serves communities throughout southeastern Saskatchewan, and throughout the year, helps families struggling with economic burdens. If you wish to donate any items at any time throughout the year, please reach out to them.
Hamper requests are increasing each year and many more items are required.
At the Gordon F. Kells High School, the student body and their families delivered non-perishable items to the school, which in turn donated them to the Carlyle Foodbank immediately after the Christmas holidays.
Items collected this year included canned fruits and vegetables, dried hash browns, soup crackers, dish and laundry soap, Kraft dinner, granola bars and much more.
This year, Gordon F. Kells honoured past graduating student Kaleb Maxie, who passed away in 2021. The Maxie/McArthur family from White Bear First Nation has been a large supporter of this student food drive for many years and 2021 was no different as hundreds of items were donated.
GFK teacher Trent Johnson, who together with vice-principal Darcy Howe, has been an administrator of this event for many years, wishes to thank all those that contributed.
“Normally around 3,000 non-perishable food items are donated annually. In remembrance of Kaleb, nearly 5,500 pieces were delivered this year. It was simply a great outpouring of support.”
