One person dead after two-vehicle collision on Highway 1

One of the drivers is facing multiple charges.

The RCMP has released more details about a fatal collision on Sept. 18.

WAPELLA - Charges have been laid in connection with a fatal collision on Highway 1 in southeast Saskatchewan.

On Sept. 18, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Moosomin RCMP received a report of a two-vehicle collision approximately two kilometres east of Wapella.

Officers responded, along with local fire and EMS crews. An investigation determined a semi-trailer unit and a truck collided. The passenger in the truck was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. She has been identified as a 22-year-old woman from Grand Prairie, Alta. Her family has been notified.

The driver of the pick-up truck was transported to hospital by EMS with injuries that, according to the RCMP, were described as non-life threatening.

The driver of the semi reported no physical injuries to police.

As a result of the investigation, 21-year-old Zachory Taylor from Codette, Sask., who was driving the pick-up truck, is charged with:

  • One count of operation of a motor vehicle while impaired causing death;
  • One count of operation while prohibited; and
  • One count, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

All charges are under the Criminal Code. 

Taylor was also arrested on outstanding warrants from the Nipawin RCMP and the Weyburn Police Service. He is scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on Sept. 23. 

The RCMP did not immediately specify which vehicle he was driving. 

The Moosomin RCMP continues to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.
